Amul Overview

The Amul Company began under the saga of exploitation in India when farmers in the Gujarat area experienced unfair trading practices and exploitation from the middleman. Angered by the injustice, the group of farmers, and after going on a milk strike, the group created the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd in 1956, which later became the Amul company.

Since then, many agricultural companies in India replicated the Amul model, which allowed farmers to own the diary, hire professionals to manage the business. The model allows for companies to adapt and respond to the demands of the farmers in cases of injustice.

Today, the company is jointly owned by 3.6 million milk producers, making India the world's largest milk producers in the world. As a co-operative company that helped establish the Indian White Revolution, the company earns a revenue of $4.1 billion for 2017.

Producing through 18,000 villages throughout India, the company produces more than 30 million liters a day and is a member of the 18 District Cooperative Milk Producers Union. Through its goal of establishing a direct link between milk producers and its consumers, all of its marketing, processing, and procurement of milk takes place through the company's manufacturing process, giving in to its success.
