L&T Finance Holdings, Ltd. was incorporated on May 1, 2008, as L&T Capital Holdings, and is a part of the L&T group. It began trading as a public limited company under the Companies Act, with finance and investments as its key business wings. Having received the Certificate of Business Commencement in May 2008, the company went on to become L&T Finance Holdings, Ltd. in September 2010, when the shareholders passed a special resolution during a meeting that year. When the name was changed, a new certificate was given to the company on September 6, 2010, by the Registrar of Certification.

Coming under Section 45 - IA of the Reserve Bank of India Act 1934, the company became a non-banking financial institution and was granted a CoR on March 31, 2009.

Sales and investments, purchase exchanges, surrenders, extinguishes and relinquishes, subscriptions, acquisitions, undertakings, underwriting, holdings, auctioning, conversions, stocks and shares, debentures, debenture stocks, bonds. L&T Finance Holdings, Ltd. also works in other key business areas, including warrants, premium notes, and treasury bills. The company trades options, futures, money market securities, as well as hedge instruments.

L&T Finance Holdings, Ltd. has come a long way since its inception, acquiring several reputed finance holding companies, including Indo Pacific Housing Finance, Ltd. and Family Credit, Ltd. from the Societe Generale Consumer Finance in 2012, along with an auto finance company from Family Credit, Ltd. in 2013.
