Novartis started an Arogya Parivar social business initiative that brings health education and affordable medicines to rural pockets in 1996. Novartis is constantly working in the direction to control and eliminate diseases like malaria and leprosy. 

Novartis and its predecessor companies, Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz trace roots back more than 250 years, with a rich history of developing innovative pharmaceutical and healthcare products. The company initially started with the production of synthetic fabric dyes, went towards the production of chemicals and ultimately started the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals.  In 2002, Novartis unifies and strengthens its global research network by creating the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Novartis completes a series of transactions that focus the company on three divisions that is Alcon (eye care), Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz (generic medicines).
